The painter Joseph Vernet (1714 - 1789)
came to La Rochelle in 1762 to paint the harbour.
King Louis XV had ordered 10 views of the Harbours of France.
Le Port de la Rochelle is the only painting of Vernet
representing La Rochelle.
Vernet was born in Avignon
shortly before the end of the Reign of Louis XIV
He died in Paris during the French Revolution.
